BASIC CHARACTER INFO
Name: Chappie
Source: CHAPPiE
Age: 7 days (with the maturity level of an older teen)
Canon Point: Two days after canon end.
Humanoid?: Yes...ish.

Inmate/Warden: Warden.
Item: Yolandi's laptop.
Canon Link: Wikipedia.
Personality: For a robot raised in a gang and that's been kidnapped and dismembered and seen almost his entire family die horribly, Chappie is surprisingly well-adjusted. Account for the fact that he's only about a week old, and that speaks volumes to his resilience.
He's still very much a child in some ways, as tough as he acts, though he has a better understanding of humanity's potential for falsehoods and cruelty than he once did. He tries to be cool and wants very much to fit in with his gang/family, talking gangsta and walking with a swagger, even bedecking himself in bling and (on his old body) getting spray-painted "tattoos". Once someone got past the initial assessment of him as a robot, the next word they would use to describe him might be "thug".
Chappie has committed an assortment of felonies, including carjacking and armed robbery, but he has done none of them out of malice. He was lied to about what knives did to humans, and when he realized that he was hurting people instead of helping them go to sleep, he apologized and ran off. He was very adamant about not being able to participate in crimes, due to a charge from his Maker, Deon, who'd made him promise that he could never do crimes and that he had to be good. However, he participated in the heist due to the fear of his own mortality, since Scout 22 had been written off when Deon had uploaded his program; the battery had been fused to the chassis, and once the remaining charge ran out, it would be permanently dead. Ninja had lied to Chappie and told him that he knew someone who could get him a new body if they had the money from the heist, which was the only reason Chappie had participated in the first place.
But overall, Chappie is good. He can be vengeful, as seen in his attack on Vincent for torturing him and killing his family, but even after beating the Australian half to death, Chappie left him alive, and forgave him for his wrongs. He is also selfless, uploading Deon's consciousness into the only spare Scout body available even though he knew it would mean his own death. Despite all the brutality that has happened to him in his short life, he is kind and optimistic. As poorly as he's been treated by humans, he still wants to make friends. He enjoys painting and likes animals, and would rather live a quiet, happy life with his family than be dragged into murder and mayhem. That is what he is trying to gain from his service on the Mourning Star.
Chappie is unique in that he would be a Warden with an Inmate's upbringing; he's spent his life among crime and criminals, and knows that they're people. He may be out of step with even his fellow Wardens, siding more with the Inmates on certain matters. Just because a person did some bad things doesn't mean that they're all bad. Chappie saw Ninja attempt to sacrifice himself for Yolandi, and Yolandi sacrificing herself to save him instead; though they were both criminals, Chappie had known them first and foremost as people, and he's sure to see the Inmates the same way.
Chappie fears being held down and unmade, like Vincent and his men had tried to do to him; he will likely react very poorly to anyone trying to get in the back of his head to where his CPU is located. He also fears death; he's not quite ready to go to the next place yet, even if the next place is the Mourning Star or one of its sister ships. Chappie takes most stressful situations in stride, even being shot; he thinks much faster than a normal human, and is willing to put himself out there to protect people who are more vulnerable than him, even when he's up against something as large and frightening as the Moose. His unusual calm in the face of peril will be an asset when dealing with potentially rowdy inmates.
Powers: Indestructible Robot Gangsta #1, Son!: Chappie is a Scout droid from Tetravaal, optimized for police work. This comes with the following abilities and restrictions:
First Person Sample: [There is a robot on the screen, coated liberally in spray paint that looks like it might be graffiti. For lack of a proper face, it still appears to be smiling; maybe it's something in the eyes. When it speaks, the synthesized voice is higher-pitched but clearly male, and his accent South African, peppered with Afrikaans pidgin.] Eyyy, fuckmothers, how's shit? I'm Chappie, the new warden 'round here. [The R in 'round' is rolled, and 'here' sounds more like 'year'.] So it's kind of like I'm like the p'lice, ja? Never had much 'sperience bein' the p'lice I can remember. [Then the robot does something odd - he sniffs. It's like a nervous tic; he brings his hand up to his face like he's wiping a nose he doesn't have. His antenna ears perk up, and he cocks his head at the camera, like he's remembering something else he wanted to say.]
Hey, all you inmates - I'm not your enemy, verstaan jy? I used to be the p'lice before I was me, and now I'm me, I'm Chappie, and my mummy and daddy are like you, and so was Amerika, nè? My family. I promise I'm not going to 'urt you, you didn't do anything to me. And my Maker says you can never break a promise.
Third Person Sample: Chappie's new digs were undoubtedly snazzier than his old ones. The hideout in Soweto had been his home, and in some ways he missed it, missed the loud echoing spaces and the art that his mummy had done all over the walls. This place was meant for humans, not Scouts; case in point, the bed. He sat down on it tentatively, testing the springs, before settling back on it, lying down like he'd done when Yolandi had read him his bedtime story.
He'd brought some things with him, some essentials - extra parts, and batteries, and a way to charge them, and a little box full of the few things that were his own. His paints, his easel, his copy of Black Sheep and Little Bird, the doll of Yolandi, his rubber chickens, and the ratty stuffed bear that Deon had brought for him. Maybe that old bear had been Deon's, once. He'd never asked.
The Scout reached behind him and picked the bear up off the bed, staring into its button eyes. "Hello, bear. I'm Chappie."
"Hello, Chappie, I'm the bear," Chappie said to himself in a higher-pitched voice. "My naam is..." Chappie stopped. He didn't have a name for the bear. But then his antennae went back, and he smiled a little, as best he could. "My naam is Deon, dit is lekker om jou te ontmoet."
A stand-in for Deon, and a stand-in for Yolandi. He already felt a little less alone.
Additional Notes: While Chappie will technically be in the body of Scout 39, I'll be using icons of him as Scout 22 because there simply isn't enough screentime for Scout 39. (Plus. Scout 22 is an adorababy.)

Powers: Indestructible Robot Gangsta #1, Son!: Chappie is a Scout droid from Tetravaal, optimized for police work. This comes with the following abilities and restrictions:
- Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger: And now that you have that Daft Punk song in your head: The Scouts are built for police and military use. They are stronger by far than an ordinary human - Chappie is seen karate-kicking a cinderblock wall into powder and ripping a car door off its hinges and flinging it several meters with no apparent effort. They can also run without stopping.
- “Plug and play.”: The design of the Scouts is modular; if one limb or component gets damaged (e.g. Scout 22’s “ear” at the beginning of the movie), another with the same input design can be slotted in to replace it. This opens up the possibility of interchangeable limbs for different applications. Who wants to see a robodork with a chainsaw arm like Ash in Evil Dead 2? Bearing available supplies in mind, you may yet get your wish.
- “This robot could be smarter than a human!”: Enhanced capacity and processing power enable Chappie to think and react at superhuman speeds. Also, he, uh, downloaded the internet? He's Wi-Fi compatible, and has a built-in GPS.
- “It’s called a guardkey. You need it to update the software on the droids.”: The Scouts have their firmware encoded with a magical little tiny USB niblet (that’s the technical term) called the guardkey, which is proprietary Tetravaal technology. No guardkey, no alterations - rendering the Scouts essentially unhackable by outside means. Barring a Tetravaal employee with the proper clearance and the administrator password going rogue, of course (looking at you, Vincent).
- “I’m titanium! I’m indestructible!”: The Scouts are built out of heavy-duty titanium alloys, and able to shrug off bullets and small explosions like they’re nothing. The only reason Scout 22 had been written off in the first place is that the direct close-range RPG hit had fused the battery to the chassis so it could not be removed and recharged. Which leads to...
- “What does that say?” “...low battery.”: The downside of being a battery-operated robot is of course that you will need to recharge your batteries every so often. For a Scout, a fully-charged battery will last approximately five or six days.
- “You go sleepy-weepy now!”: The Scout droids are briefly vulnerable to EMP blasts, rebooting in a matter of minutes. But a matter of minutes may be all someone with nefarious intentions could need…
- “You’re just a bunch of wires, mate!”: If a Scout is caught unawares by someone who knows what they’re doing, they can break into the panel on the back of the Scout’s head and remove or damage the CPU, essentially rendering them inoperable/“dead”. That would require the aforementioned EMP blast and some power tools to finish the job before the Scout could get back up. So if you want to take Chappie out? Now you know how!
